If I couldn’t get him, we would do the four-person show. I got him! JASON HOFFMAN has enthusiastically agreed to do the show. It is going to be a unique and fascinating production, conceived by Jason several years ago, and presented on Spickler Stage for the first time. More details to follow, but remember, there will only be 10 performances including New Year’s Eve, so book now! This is going to be wonderful theater. I’m very excited.

Alfred Uhry’s 1988 Pulitzer Prize-Winning play is beginning production at The Playhouse. We have precast Hoke Colburn. It will be played by the multi-talented ANDRE BROWN. Andre played Jim in BIG RIVER last season at The Playhouse. So, the hunt for Daisy Werthan is now under way.

The play, originally part of a trilogy by Mr. Uhry entitled “Atlanta Trilogy” takes place between 1948 and 1973. Quite a bit happened in that quarter of a century, particularly in the south. With this play, we get to experience the beauty that is possible, even during troubled times. This is a story about an unlikely, yet preordained friendship.

We are presently scheduling auditions for the roles of Miss Daisy and for Boolie. Since there are so few roles, we are going to conduct first auditions at times that are convenient for those who would like to audition. In other words, there is no open call. Instead, call me at the theater (301-739-7469), or send me an email (at jeff@wcpdt.com) to let me know when you would like to audition. Any day; any time. If you use email, please put Daisy in the subject line.

There will be a second audition. That one will be scheduled at Andre’s convenience because we will need to see Daisy and Boolie candidates with him. At the first interview, I’ll want to see you go from old, to older, to oldest. Like all of us, Miss Daisy is trapped in her aging frame, but always vital in her thoughts. And her change from a person of rigid structure, in which she had always found comfort, to a person of emotions, and respect for those emotions, is as invigorating as Hoke’s transition to a man of self-worth and dignity.

Andre and I are looking forward to beginning work on this project. It has the potential to be one of the best things we’ve done at The Playhouse. We hope to hear from everyone who would like to be a part of this effort. It’s going to be a very good memory, for a very long time…just like the play.

Thanks,
Jeff
